The Renault Kangoo [ kɑ̃ˈɡu ] is a high-roof station wagon from the manufacturer Renault , which came onto the market in October 1997 as the successor to the Renault Rapid and is built in Maubeuge in northern France near the Belgian border by the company Maubeuge Construction Automobile . Like its predecessor, it is a spacious vehicle with low acquisition and maintenance costs. Depending on the equipment variant, the Renault Kangoo is suitable as a station wagon, small van, large-capacity taxi / minibus or wheelchair taxi.

In January 2008 the Kangoo went into the second generation. In 2012 the Kangoo ZE received the Van of the Year award .

After the Citroën Berlingo, which came on the market in autumn 1996, the Renault Kangoo was the second high-roof estate and the first with one, later with two sliding side doors . Since these contributed significantly to the establishment of this class, many see him as its founder. The Kangoo has a torsion bar at the rear , which is rarely used today.

The Renault Clio served as the basis of the Kangoo . The first generation was produced from August 1997 to December 2009. During this time it was modified twice:

In April 2003, a revised model came onto the market with the Kangoo phase II , the front section of which was optically matched to the other Renault models.

Another light facelift was carried out in October 2005 .

There were various equipment lines in the car edition. In Germany, these included the Privilège equipment line and the Campus edition, as well as RT , RXE and RTE . The latter was the cheaper option. In Austria there was Authentique , Expression , Privilège . There were also various special models (Tahiti, for you, Montana, Oasis, Pampa, Ice, Alizé etc.).

At the end of 2007, the production of the Kangoo was relocated from the Maubeuge plant to Morocco. The product range has been reduced to two versions: the Kangoo Edition Campus 1,2 16V 75 as a gasoline engine and the Kangoo Edition 1,5 dCi 70 as a diesel. After numerous technical difficulties, production was stopped at the end of 2009.

At the moment the first generation Kangoo is still being produced in northern Africa by SOMACA and in Brazil by Renault do Brasil . In North Africa, the second generation is offered in parallel as the Kangoo Evolution .

Nissan Kubistar

The van version of the Kangoo was also sold by Nissan as the Nissan Kubistar from August 2003 to January 2009, replacing the Vanette .

In contrast to the Kangoo, the Kubistar was only available as a light commercial vehicle. In addition, there were only three gasoline and three diesel engines to choose from.

In January 2008, the Renault Kangoo appeared on the market as a new version. The Nissan Kubistar was produced until the beginning of 2009 and then replaced by the Nissan NV200 developed by Nissan itself .

Kangoo Electri 'Cité

The Renault Kangoo Electri 'Cité was sold exclusively in France. It is powered purely electrically by nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries from Saft with a 25 kW electric motor on the front wheels. It reaches a speed of up to 110 km / h, the range is 80 to 100 km, the consumption from the socket approx. 25 kWh / 100 km. A charger for 230 V, 50 Hz is built-in and can be switched between 2.2 kW (10 A fuse) or 3.5 kW (16 A fuse).

Kangoo Elect'road RE

The Renault Kangoo Elect'road RE ( RE stands for Range Extender ) was sold exclusively in France. As a serial hybrid , it is powered purely electrically by nickel-cadmium batteries from the company Saft with a 25 kW electric motor via the front wheels. It reaches a speed of up to 110 km / h, the purely electric range is 80 to 100 km, the consumption approx. 25 kWh / 100 km. The generator to increase the range is driven by a two-cylinder petrol engine with 16 kW output. If necessary, this recharges the drive battery. With a tank of 11 liters of petrol, the range increases to over 200 km. At its time, this car was one of the few available plug-in hybrids , as the traction battery could also be fed with electricity from the socket.

With the Cleanova II there is now a significantly improved plug-in hybrid vehicle. This was exhibited at the Ever Monaco 2007 , among other things , and could be tried out by trade visitors. A 60 kW electric motor and a 40 kW 750 cm³ two-cylinder four-stroke engine for every mixture of ethanol and gasoline (Weber Motor) form a newly developed drive unit, which via two electronically controlled clutches a serial hybrid drive under 80 km / h and a parallel hybrid drive over 80 km / h in one drive unit. A lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 24 kWh ensures a longer range and, thanks to its better efficiency, significantly lower consumption. The standard consumption is 14.4 kWh / 100 km in town and 19.6 kWh / 100 km outside of town.

Special models

The Kangoo was also available from October 2001 to June 2007 as a model with automatically engaged all-wheel drive . This 4 × 4 was also available as a diesel until the end of 2005.

After the Renault Kangoo was sold more than 2.2 million times, Renault presented the new edition of the Kangoo at the IAA in September 2007. The second generation has been on the market since February 2008.

The X61 platform is no longer based on a small car platform, but on that of the Mégane and the Scénic . The Kangoo was 178 mm longer and now measures 4,214 mm, which benefits the interior in particular. Among other things, a height-adjustable seat and a height-adjustable steering wheel as well as electrically retractable side windows in the sliding doors are new. For the first time, the Kangoo is also available with FAP ( soot particle filter ) and six gears. It is offered in different equipment variants:

  • Access (since 2010)
  • Authentique
  • Expression
  • Privilège (until 2010)
  • Luxe (since 2010)
  • Special model HAPPY FAMILY

There are also two short versions: the short VU (Véhicule Utilitaire / Commercial Vehicle) from summer 2008 and the short VP (Véhicule Particuliaire / Passenger Vehicle) from 2009. Since 2012, a 7-seater version with an extended wheelbase called the Grand Kangoo has been available .

Renault Kangoo be bop (2009-2013)

In addition to the conventional model with five doors, Renault offered the three-door Kangoo be bop (spelling also Be Bop ) from April 2009 . This 3.87 meter long version of the Kangoo was marketed as a lifestyle vehicle with a glass roof, four individual seats and a two-tone body. The Renault ZE Concept electric vehicle (70 kW electric motor with a torque of 226 Nm) , which was presented at the end of 2008, is based on it .

Production stopped with the Kangoo's facelift in March 2013.

Kangoo ZE

At the end of 2011, sales of the Kangoo ZE (for “Zero Emission”) began in Germany at a price of 23,800 euros including VAT - excluding batteries. The batteries are also rented out, for example for 89.25 euros per month with an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers. The battery capacity was initially 22 kWh. In 2017 it was increased to 33 kWh, which increases the standard range by 100 to 270 km; since then it has also been possible to buy the battery.

The car's electric motor has an output of 44 kW (60 hp).

The Kangoo ZE also got a facelift in 2013; As with the electric Renault ZOE, the electrical connection has been moved behind the Renault logo. The front was later adapted to the combustion version.

Kangoo ZE H2

In June 2015, 21 of these vehicles were delivered in Grenoble . In 2017, sales of the Kangoo ZE H2 began in Germany. This version is an electric car with a lithium-ion battery and fuel cell from the French manufacturer Symbio Fcell . This hardly required any fundamental changes to the vehicle itself: the additional components, which are designed for 7,000 operating hours, were combined in an H2 kit. The conceptual design of the kit was carried out in close cooperation with Renault Tech. The kits are assembled in a Michelin factory and meet all automotive standards including component tracking. The car with a 44 kW electric motor reaches a top speed of 130 km / h.

The maximum electric range of the ZE H2 is 270 km; The fuel cell adds 230 km. The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 33 kWh, the fuel cell 5 kWh. A ZE H2 from 2015 (first generation) with 22 kWh standard battery charge and 1.8 kg of hydrogen had a range of 367 kilometers on a mixed night drive (lights and heating switched on; in cities and suburban areas). The hydrogen tank is filled with 1.78 kg at 350 bar and 2.09 kg at 700 bar, depending on the pressure. The consumption is 0.87 kg per 100 km.

The price for the Kangoo ZE H2 also depends on the filling pressure and is at a list price of € 52,550 for the 350 bar version and € 58,250 for the 700 bar version. In June 2019, there are almost 300 Kangoo ZE H2 on the road in Europe .

Kangoo Rapid (panel van)

As a commercial vehicle, the Kangoo is available in three lengths: as Kangoo Rapid Compact (3829 mm), Kangoo Rapid (4213 mm) and Kangoo Rapid Maxi (4597 mm, double cab possible). With a loading space width of 1218 mm between the wheel arches, both the Rapid and the Rapid Maxi offer space for two Euro pallets .

Mercedes-Benz Citan

A model for Mercedes-Benz based on the Kangoo is also manufactured in the French plant , which was launched in October 2012 as the Mercedes-Benz Citan . It differs from the Kangoo at the front and rear and on the dashboard.

Nissan NV250

The manufacturer Nissan presented the NV250 as the successor to the NV200 in May 2019 . This came on the market in September 2019 and differs from the Kangoo W only in modifications to the front. In contrast, a new edition of the Kangoo has already been announced for 2020.
