Renault Laguna I (type 56) refers to the first generation of the mid-size car Laguna by Renault .
Model history
The first Laguna was introduced to the public in November 1993 as the successor to the Renault 21 , with the market launch taking place in January 1994. At first it was only available as a hatchback sedan, as a notchback version like the R21 was no longer planned.
A station wagon version followed in September 1995, which in France was called "Nevada" like its predecessor R21 and was sold in Germany as "Grand Tour".
With this type, Renault increased the quality significantly, after there had been strong criticism of the reliability of many Renault models. In the course of this, the maintenance intervals were extended to 15,000 km at the end of 1995.

Facelift
In April 1998 the first Laguna received a facelift (called "Phase II"), which in addition to new engines (1.6 16V with 79 kW / 107 PS, 1.8 16V with 88 kW / 120 PS, and 1.9 dTi with 72 kW / 98 PS) included more extensive standard equipment (air conditioning and side airbag ) and minor retouching (including clear glass headlights and new taillights).
As part of the model update, the range was reduced to four equipment variants ( RN, Standard, Concorde and Initiale ). The Initiale equipment was only offered for the Laguna I Phase II in 1999 and contained the full equipment including a navigation system, electric seats, sunroof, wood decor and leather. The Concorde equipment variant included, among other things, automatic air conditioning, light alloy wheels , cassette radio with 6-disc CD changer, metallic paintwork and four electric windows . A Webasto parking heater could also be supplied on request.
From November 1998 the first common rail diesel (1.9 dCi with 79 kW / 107 hp) from Renault was in the Laguna. The 1.9 dTi was only available with the “Proactiv” automatic. The 2.0-8V petrol engine with 114 hp was taken over from phase I and was last only available with the “Proactiv” automatic.
By the end of production in March 2001, the first Laguna had been built around 1.5 million times and took the top position in the French market over its peers Peugeot and Citroën .
