Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test |
Renault Espace IV (type JK) is the fourth generation of the MPV Espace by Renault , which was made by the fall of 2002 until the end, 2014.
Model history
The fourth generation of the Espace with the Renault internal name JK came on the market in November 2002.
This version was the first van to receive the highest rating of five Euro NCAP stars in the crash test .
With the Espace IV, which was also available as the Grand Espace from the start, practically everything changed:
- This model was no longer produced by Matra , but by Renault.
- He had no more to space frame oriented lightweight -Skelettkarosserie of previous models, but a classic self-supporting steel body , with attachments of different materials (plastics, light metals) has been added: In order to limit the vehicle mass were, for example, the doors of aluminum and the front fender Made of polycarbonate . The tailgate was made of a sheet molding compound (SMC).
- Due to the belts now integrated into the rear seats, the seats were much heavier than in the earlier models.
Nevertheless, even after seven years of production (as of October 2009), the Espace was still regarded as a contemporary van, often as a reference in terms of driving comfort and noise.
Models
Phase I (2002-2006)
Six different engines were available for the Authentique , Expression , Privilège and Initiale equipment variants .
All variants already included in the standard equipment, for example, air conditioning , automatically acting parking brake , fog lights , electric windows on all windows, an automatic door lock that can be switched off after starting up and automatic door unlocking in the event of a collision, and a car radio .
Technical specifications
The engine range initially comprised three petrol and three diesel engines. The top model had a 3.5-liter six-cylinder gasoline engine, which was supplied by the Renault subsidiary Nissan and also installed in the Nissan 350Z . The 3.0-liter diesel engine was supplied by Isuzu as a supply unit . This machine was also installed in the Renault Vel Satis , as the 3.0 V6 CDTI in the Opel Vectra / Signum and as the 3.0 TiD in the Saab 9-5 . Until a revision in 2006, the unit was considered to be thermally sensitive. In addition, defects in the high-pressure pump and shifts in the cylinder liners pressed into the cylinder block are noticeable.

Phase II (2006-2010)
In April 2006, the Espace received a facelift with Phase II . The equipment variants were called Expression , Dynamique , Privilege or Initiale . In addition, special editions were offered for a limited time, such as Tech Run , Navitech , Edition PGA , Edition 25th or Celsium .
In addition to eliminating inadequacies in individual components, the externally visible model revisions were:
- Elimination of the rotating front seats available until then.
Changes
- Clear glass headlights with xenon and cornering light (cornering light as an option for "Initiale Paris")
- modified surround of the fog lights
- Radiator grille with two instead of three slats
- repositioned rear lights, with changed shape of the turn signal diffuser.
- New or revised diesel engines with 4 valves per cylinder, balance shafts to reduce free inertia forces, maintenance-free timing chain for the valve train and piezoelectrically controlled diesel injectors from the Renault-Nissan joint venture Cléon south of Rouen . Most diesel engines now had a modern diesel particulate filter , named at Renault with the marketing name FAP ( F iltre à p articules, French for (diesel soot) particulate filter).
- Anchoring system for the rear individual seats
- the 6-speed automatic transmission.
- Introduction of the Carminat 3 navigation and communication system
- redesigned center console
Section through a 2.0 dCi engine, type M9R with diesel soot particle filter, used in the Espace since April 2006. Production also for Nissan in the Renault-Nissan joint venture Cléon, south of Rouen

Phase IV (2012-2014)
In July 2012, the Espace received a further facelift .
The redesigned front with a new grille, larger logo and redesigned bumper is characteristic of this version. In addition, the lower part of the headlights was darkened.
At the end of 2013, the TCe 170, the gasoline engine with turbocharger, was taken out of the range without replacement, so only the 2.0 dCi diesel engine was available in the two output levels 110 and 127 kW.
At the end of 2014, production was stopped after 12 years. The successor, designed as a crossover and more like an SUV than a van, has been available since March 2015.
