The Renault R-series was a truck series from the French manufacturer Renault Véhicules Industriels , which was introduced in 1980. It was a modernized Berliet TR, because due to the merger of Berliet and Saviem to Renault Industrial, all vehicles produced so far were only marketed as Renault . The first model was offered as the Renault R310 with a 12-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine with 224 kW (305 hp) with turbocharger , 9-speed manual gearbox and retarder . Initially it was available with a gross vehicle weight of 19 tons and two wheelbases of 3.3 meters and 3.6 meters as a regional transport truck and as a tractor unit up to a total weight of 38 tons. Air suspension on the rear axle and ABS were optionally available. A long- haul truck followed as the Renault R360 with a 14.88 liter V8 diesel engine and 262 kW (356 hp) with turbocharger and direct injection . In addition to the 9-speed transmission, a Fuller 13-speed manual transmission was also available as an option. The R360 offered a total weight of 44 tons as a tractor unit.

In 1984 the R360 became the R370 with now 268 kW (365 PS), 9-speed gearbox or optionally 12-speed Fuller gearbox. The R340 replaced the R310 in 1986 with a 12-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine and now 249 kW (338 hp). A total weight of 40 tonnes was now possible as a semitrailer. In the same year, the R390 also replaced the R370 with an engine output of 286 kW (389 hp). Now a second bunk in the driver's cab could also be ordered.

The next revision took place in 1988. The R365 with the 12-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine and 275 kW (374 PS) with 2x9 split gear, air suspension on the rear axle and retarder as well as 19 tonnes as a distributor and 40 tonnes as a tractor unit were also included in the range. The R420 replaced the R390 and had internally ventilated disc brakes all around . The output of the 15L V8 diesel engine increased to 310 kW (422 hp). The equipment included 2x9 split gear, ABS, differential lock and aluminum tank. Electrically adjustable exterior mirrors were optionally available.

1990 facelift version

In 1990 the new Magnum AE appeared . The R-series received a facelift in the exterior design as well as on the dashboard. Now the R365 became the R380 with the 12-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine with 275 kW (374 hp), a 2x9 split gearbox, air suspension, retarder and heated exterior mirrors. ABS and an on-board computer were optionally available.

In 1992 the series was renamed Renault Major . The R380 became the R385 with 283 kW (385 hp). The Major was built until 1996, with the R385 being the best-selling variant as a regional truck and the R420 only rarely being sold since the Magnum AE appeared. The Renault Premium became the successor to the series.
