Renault Clio I (Type 57) is the name of the first generation of Renault's Clio small car .

Model history

The Clio (Type 57) was built from May 1990 to September 1998. The model series went through two revisions and is therefore divided into three construction phases.

The first minor modifications were made in March 1994. The bumpers were now painted in body color (previously only on certain models). The rear lights and the exterior mirrors have also been changed.

The most noticeable external revision was the facelift in September 1996 with modified headlights and a standard third brake light.

Equipment

RL

Two-speed windscreen wipers with wipe / wash tap contact; Storage compartment in the driver's door; adjustable headrests; height-adjustable seat belts at the front, seat belt buckles integrated into the seats; foldable rear bench seat; fully enclosed A, B and C pillars; standard cabling for subsequent radio installation; Heated rear window; with and without wear indicator for the front disc brake pads.

RN

Rear window wipers and washers; Pointer watch; Rear ashtray; Vanity mirror on driver's side; Radio cover; lighted and covered trunk; Door lining with fabric insert; Glove compartment with lock.

RT (in addition to RN)

Central locking with infrared remote control; electric front windows; Velor upholstery; Rear automatic belts; Oil level indicator in the dashboard; adjustable dashboard lighting; Reading spot; hinged rear side windows (two-door); Warm air nozzles to the rear compartment. In phase 2 with an extended dashboard, under which there is a storage compartment and the clock. There is now a small coin compartment in the old place of the clock.

Clio 16V

Top version released in summer 1991. Body-colored bumpers with integrated spoiler; widened front fenders made of a new type of flexible composite material (2 mm thick Noryl ). In the event of a collision below 15 km / h, the fenders return to their original shape. The rear side section was also provided with a widening. The wheel arches are connected with wide side skirts. There was a roof spoiler above the rear window. The slightly curved bonnet was also provided with an air scoop to dissipate heat from the exhaust manifold. Inside the Clio 16V had sports seats, optionally in leather. Gear lever and three-spoke steering wheel with leather cover, modified dashboard with enlarged glare protection and integrated additional instruments (oil temperature, oil pressure, oil level).

Further equipment variants
  • Great (basic equipment without extras - offered as an inexpensive entry-level variant)
  • Graffiti (with cassette radio, sun canopy and colorful seats - only available in blue, pink, white and black)
  • Campus (entry-level model similar to the Renault 5 Campus and the Clio Prima)
  • Baccarat (phase 1/2) / initial (phase 3) (luxury version with leather interior, chrome door openers, air conditioning, special 14 "alloy wheels, burl wood decor)
  • Caribe, Chiemsee, Davos, Fidji, Grand Prix, Limited, Maxi, Mexx, Oasis, RTi, RSi, Williams

There were also convertible conversion kits for this vehicle from around 1992 to 1996, which were sold by the official Renault house tuner Elia-AG. A direct convertible was officially only available as a drivable study, a unique piece that, as far as is known, is on display at Renault France. All other Clio convertibles are definitely conversions. Low (three-door) models were often used for these conversions, as the Clios were still quite young at that time. Often the variants RL, RN, Prima, Graffiti or Campus were the basis for these conversions, other equipment is very rare.

These conversions are well known and notorious for their somewhat complicated handling and a certain amount of leakage. The tarpaulin roof is more or less a rain cover and not a full roof. There are two variations: With the older kit, the roof is held on the side wall with push buttons, with the younger kit, the roof is pressed against the side wall with a mounting bracket.

In Germany, ELIA delivered around 500 conversion kits. It is not known how many vehicles were actually converted. It is also not known how many convertible conversions are still on the road.

Special models

Clio 16V

The Clio 16V has an engine with 1.8 l displacement and 99 kW (135 hp). This variant was produced in only about 30,000 units from mid-1991 to spring 1994. In addition, 500 copies of the special "Grand Prix" model were built in 1995 in honor of Michael Schumacher, who won the F1 title in a Benetton Renault.

In honor of the Formula 1 team boss Frank Williams , there was the Clio Williams from mid-1994 to autumn 1997 . This special model, limited to 5,000 pieces, was equipped with a 16V engine, 2.0 l displacement and 147 hp.

In 1995 there was also a special model called the “Swiss Champion”, a kind of second edition of the first phase of the Williams model. Only 500 copies were made. The model was built by Renault because Nigel Mansell had become Formula 1 World Champion with Williams-Renault for the first time.
