The Renault Avantime is from autumn 2001 to spring 2003 by Matra on behalf of Renault -built passenger car model of the upper middle class . The vehicle concept was designed from the outset for a niche model in that it had the space of a van , but was only provided with three doors and upscale equipment.

history

The technical basis was shared by the Avantime, introduced in November 2001, with the Espace presented at the end of 1996 . In the Renault model range, the Avantime was to be classified between Espace and Renault Vel Satis .

The Avantime offered some technical innovations. For example, the mechanism was unique, thanks to which the 1.40 meter long and 60 kg heavy side doors were also moved forward on a curved track when they were opened, thus enlarging the entry opening without requiring more space on the side. Other special features were the large panoramic sliding glass roof and the exterior, which was always painted in two colors, as well as the numerous leather appointments.

The vehicle was produced at Matra in Romorantin-Lanthenay and, like the Espace, had a plastic body mounted on a galvanized steel chassis. The Avantime was characterized by its unconventional design, but became an economic debacle due to sales problems.

Then there was the bankruptcy of the production company and the decision by Renault to build the fourth generation of the Espace with an ordinary steel body, which deprived the Matra plant of its livelihood. This led to the discontinuation of the Avantime on February 27, 2003 after 8,545 vehicles were manufactured, which also meant the closure of the production facility in Romorantin. The end of the automotive division of Matra was sealed, whereby the company was taken over by Pininfarina in 2004.

In addition to the voluminous basic shape, the main reason for design discussions was the unusually designed rear end, which in a modified form on the Renault Vel Satis and Renault Mégane also emphasized its "independence", but in the latter case it became an economic success for Renault.

Technical specifications

The following two gasoline engines and one diesel were used as engines:
