The Renault 21 (Type 48) - R21 for short - is a passenger car made by Renault . This was built from spring 1986 to the end of 1994 ( Nevada to the end of 1995) and is a mid-range car .

Model history

The R21 is available in three different body versions: notchback , hatchback and station wagon .

In March 1986, the notchback sedan was first introduced. The station wagon version was launched in June 1986 under the name "Nevada". A hatchback sedan appeared for the facelift of the series in May 1989.

The R21 was available in different versions, both in terms of engine power and equipment.

The GTS version contained power steering , electric windows and an infrared central locking system . In the first generation of the model, ABS and air conditioning were available in the more expensive versions (with longitudinal engine) for a surcharge.

In May 1989 there was a facelift, on the occasion of which there were not only a modernized and rounder appearance but also various additional equipment variants. For example, an ABS system, air conditioning or automatic air conditioning were offered.

The hatchback sedan was replaced by the Renault Laguna I at the beginning of 1994 , while the notchback version was discontinued without replacement at the end of 1994. The station wagon was renamed Renault Nevada in May 1993 and was built until the end of 1995.

Special

The Renault 21 has a remarkable body structure. The car weighs only about 1050 kg and still passed the US crash standards of the time in 1987. The Renault 21 was sold by Chrysler as the Eagle Medallion in the USA . In the body there are reinforcements made of light metal alloys, the engine block rests with rubber bearings on the large axle beam, which is integrated into the structure as a subframe . The lateral stability was ensured with two cross members in the car floor. The similarly constructed Renault 19 (weight approx. 930 kg) achieved top marks in crash comparisons in the early 1990s.

In addition, the R21 was built in many body styles. There were two different wheelbases, just to accommodate the different engines (longitudinally or transversely installed engine). Engines installed lengthways required a shorter wheelbase, recognizable by the front fenders; The distance between the wheel and the front door is less than that of the transverse motor variants. Some models were offered with all-wheel drive. The R 21 Nevada was also available with 7 seats.
