Subframe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The subframe (also aggregate (s) support (front) -Achskörper or sub-frame) is a component of many passenger vehicles with self-supporting body . The articulation points of the wheel suspensions on the body side are attached to the subframe ; the engine, transmission, steering gear and, in vehicles with driven front wheels, the differential are usually also attached to the front subframe. The subframe can be rigidly screwed to the body (integral support) or connected to the body via rubber mounts. This makes the assembly of the vehicle easier and the body does not have to absorb such great forces from the wheel suspensions. When using rubber mounts, fewer vibrations and noises are transmitted from the chassis and possibly from the engine to the body.

variants

In the basic shape often used in modern cars, the subframe has the shape of an internally open rectangle or trapezoid, is mostly welded from sheet metal from two molded parts to form a hollow profile and attached to the body at at least four points from below.

If the subframe other functions are intended, such. B. the inclusion of double wishbones or transverse leaf springs , the component consists not only of the almost flat base body described above, but also of additional superstructures reaching into the engine compartment ( Trabant 601 , Citroën GS ).

history

A front axle in the sense of a rigid axle no longer exists in modern passenger cars; it has been gradually replaced by independent suspension since the late 1920s .

Until the 1950s, sometimes longer (e.g. VW Beetle or Wartburg 353 ), a passenger car was built from two basic assemblies: the chassis or frame on which the axles or the components of the wheel suspension were attached, and the body , the body, which did not need to be particularly stable because of the load-bearing function of the frame and which could be exchanged relatively easily for other, for example open, bodies.
