The Renault 3 - R3 for short - was a car model that was sold by the French manufacturer Renault between September 1961 and August 1962. It was the economy version of the successful Renault 4 model . With its spartan equipment, the R3 was especially intended for the needs of authorities.
However, since sales remained below expectations, production was discontinued after only 2571 copies. In Germany, the R3 was offered as an inexpensive variant of the R4 without its own name.
Differences to the R4
The body was identical to that of the R4, only the third side window between the C and D pillars was missing. The car had neither chrome trim nor an electric heater fan. Only a four-cylinder in-line engine with 603 cc and 23 hp (17 kW) was installed. Due to the reduced cubic capacity, the car was classified in tax class 3 in France , which was reflected in the model designation R3. The car was probably only offered in light gray.
