The Renault Frégate was a passenger car of the upper middle class , the French car manufacturer Renault produced from 1951 to 1960.

Planning for a model in this class began during the Second World War, parallel to the development of the Renault 4CV . A prototype was even created, but development was postponed in favor of the more important 4CV project. The designs were shelved after the war and the new model had to be completely redeveloped.

The Frégate was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1950, and the first examples were delivered in November 1951. The engine had a displacement of 1996 cc and developed 60 hp (44 kW). In 1956 the five-door estate version Domaine came onto the market. An engine with a displacement of 2141 cm³ and - according to the SAE standard - 77 hp (57 kW) at 4400 rpm was now also available. The maximum torque was 157 Nm at 2200 rpm. The gearbox had four gears, the gear lever was on the steering column. A three-speed automatic was also later available. The front wheels were suspended from double wishbones. The Frégate was one of the first series-production cars with a trailing arm rear axle . There were drum brakes all around (front duplex ).

By the end of production in 1960, 163,383 Frégates had been built at the plant in Flins-sur-Seine , France. The successor was indirectly the Rambler-Renault , an AMC Rambler Classic assembled by Renault in Belgium . The smaller R16 was Renault's own top model from 1965. From 1975 Renault again offered a car of a similar size with the R30 and R20 .
