Birnin Kebbi is the capital of the Nigerian state of Kebbi and is located in the northwest of Nigeria. The city has 125,594 inhabitants (as of 2012).

Birnin Kebbi is located on the Sokoto River and is also the capital of the emirate of Gwandu . The city is connected to Argungu and Jega by roads. However, the A1 does not go through Birnin Kebbi, but through the town of Jega, 17 km away.

history

As a settlement of the Kebbawa , a subgroup of the Hausa , Birnin Kebbi was conquered in 1516 by the Banza state Kebbi under the leadership of Muhammadu Kanta . Since December 12, 1991, Birnin Kebbi has been the capital of the newly founded state of Kebbi of the same name.

Birnin Kebbi and its surroundings form one of the 21 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Kebbi with an area of ​​1327 km². At the last census in 1991 the LGA had 150,520 inhabitants and thus a population density of 113 inhabitants per km². There were 63,147 inhabitants in the city itself.
