history

After the Kebbi state, inhabited by Hausa, was defeated by the Fulani Empire in 1808 , the rulers of Kebbi fled to Argungu to found a new emirate there. The neighboring Gwandu , who conquered Kebbi in 1831, did not succeed in subjugating Argungu completely; in the period that followed, there were several uprisings there. By the end of the 19th century, Argungu had effectively become an independent state; however, in 1902 it came under British rule.

The building of the Kanta Museum, located next to the main market, was built in 1831 and named after Muhammed Kanta, who founded the Kingdom of Kebbi in 1515. It served as the emir's palace until the British built a new administrative palace in 1942 . Since 1958 it has been a history museum and at the same time the burial place of the local emirs.
