The Renault Sport Spider was originally designed as a Cup Spider for racing (Renault Sport Spider Trophy in the run-up to Formula 1 ) and built by the Renault Motorsport unit Renault Sport in Dieppe .

The futuristic body with the scissor doors swinging open in the original version has no windshield; instead, it is shaped in such a way that the approaching wind is directed over the occupants. Renault recommended wearing a helmet to protect yourself from insects and stones while driving.

In the period from spring 1995 to autumn 1999, the Spider was also manufactured as a street version with a wind deflector or with a heated windshield . 1493 models were created.

The vehicle has an aluminum frame, consisting of a main frame and an auxiliary frame at the front and rear. The engine is installed transversely as a mid-engine in the rear subframe and has an output of 108 kW (147 hp) from a displacement of 2.0 liters. All wheels are individually suspended, at the front on double wishbones and at the rear on triangular transverse and longitudinal links. There are stabilizers on both axles. At the front, the spring struts are installed horizontally and horizontally to allow the body to be kept low.

The outer skin of the spider consists of GfK ( glass fiber reinforced plastic ) and is screwed to the chassis. The weight of the sturdy GRP dress is responsible for the relatively high total weight of the Spider of around 965 kg in the version with windshields. The wind deflector Spider is a little lighter at around 930 kg. The overall construction still helps the Spider to achieve respectable performance and excellent road holding. The disc brake system originally used in the Alpine 610 Turbo ensures the appropriate racing-grade deceleration.

In addition to the recaro bucket seats that can only be adjusted lengthways, the Spider has adjustable pedals to adapt to the driver's size. Convertible top, heating, radio, brake booster, power steering and auxiliary equipment such as ABS or even ESP do not exist in the Spider. As the only safety concession, the windshield spider was factory-fitted with a raid airbag steering wheel (365 mm), while the wind deflector spider was previously only delivered with a conventional 3-spoke steering wheel without an airbag. When stationary, the interior of both Spider variants can be protected from rainwater with a button-down tarpaulin; for driving in the rain it can be divided with a zipper in the middle.

Claude Fior developed the Spider and the windshield successor for Renault Sport from 1994 to 1996.
