The Renault Twizy is an open, two-seater, fully electric motor vehicle ( electric car ) from the French manufacturer Renault .
history
The first series-ready units of the model were presented to the world in January 2011 at the Festival Automobile International in Paris. Series production started in 2011. The vehicle has been available in Germany since March 2012.
Models
The Twizy is available in two engines. In Germany, the open version was classified as a quad ( EG L7e ) according to Directive 92/61 / EEC until January 2017 and thus bypasses legal hurdles for passenger vehicles . This guideline covers four-wheeled light vehicles with more than 45 km / h and more than 50 cm³ or with a maximum power of 15 kW with an electric drive and an empty weight (without battery and driver) of maximum 400 kg.
According to Directive 92/61 / EEC or 2007/46 / EC (max. 45 km / h and no more than 50 cm³ or a maximum of 4 kW electric motor), the limited version counted as a four-wheeled light vehicle according to EG L6e.
Since January 1, 2017, the "European Regulation (EU) No. 168/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council of January 15, 2013 on the approval and market surveillance of two-, three-wheel and four-wheel vehicles" has been in force in Germany. This meant that the Twizy could no longer be sold in its previous form. In this ordinance, the limit of 15 kW (L6e 4 kW) has been replaced by power (even more than 15 kW), maximum speed (maximum 90 km / h for L7e ) and torque values defined in the type approval .
In addition, it is now a prerequisite for a type approval that the manufacturer has taken suitable measures to secure these values against change (Article 20 in the regulation).
The entry-level model is the Twizy Urban 45 with a top speed of 45 km / h. Its electric motor has a maximum output of 4 kW (5.4 PS) over 30 minutes and, when accelerating for a few seconds, a peak output of 7.6 kW (10 PS) and a maximum torque of 33 Nm. This model with an insurance license plate can be driven from the age of 16, provided that you have an AM driving license .
The version with 8.5 kW (12 PS ), which can be called up over 30 minutes, with its three-phase asynchronous electric motor , provides a peak power of 12.6 kW (17 PS) for a few seconds to accelerate, and is available in three equipment variants (Urban , Color and Technic) and has a top speed of 80 km / h, the maximum torque is 57 Nm. A class B driver's license and official registration are required for these versions .
Since June 2013 Renault has also been offering the Twizy as a single-seat commercial vehicle under the name Twizy Cargo . The second seat behind the driver's seat is omitted and a rear door is also installed. The "trunk" has a capacity of 156 liters. According to Renault, two crates of drinks can be stacked on top of each other. The loading compartment measures 55 cm × 50 cm in area and is 95 cm high.

Equipment
The two seats of the Twizy are arranged one behind the other, with the passenger having to position their legs to the left and right of the driver's seat. The vehicle concept is already known from the past with scooter mobiles , especially the Messerschmitt cabin scooter . A separate trunk is only available as a cargo version without space for a passenger .
The standard equipment includes a driver airbag , a 4-point seat belt at the front, a 3-point seat belt at the rear, integrated headrests, four disc brakes , a lockable steering column, a handbrake with locking when the contact is deactivated, a coded electronic immobilizer and one that can be activated manually Noise simulator. Two storage compartments at the front, one storage compartment behind the front passenger seat and an on-board computer with an integrated econometer are also part of the standard equipment. Due to the elasticity of the electric motor, no gearbox is required. The Twizy Technic has a metallic paintwork, light alloy wheels and carbon decor inside and out.
Depending on the model, the paintwork is available for the body, the entry frame and the exterior mirrors in the four colors Caribbean blue, salsa red, black pearl (black) and igloo white, which can be combined with one another.
Optionally, for all versions of the Twizy, upward-swinging scissor doors without panes are available. Side windows can be retrofitted since October 2012. A heater is not available, the front window is equipped with a window heater. A windscreen wiper with wipe-wash function is also available.
Battery and range
The 98 kg heavy 6.1 kWh lithium-ion battery is charged at a normal 230 V socket with an output of approx. 2300 watts . In newer generations of chargers, this value has been reduced to 2000 watts.
An approximately three meter long spiral charging cable with a power plug is located in the front of the Twizy. A full charge takes 3.5 hours and approx. 6.5 kWh. After a charging time of 2.5 hours the battery is 80% charged, after 3 hours it is about 95% charged. With a protective circuit, the charger reduces its output to up to 1500 watts at higher temperatures, which increases the charging time accordingly. The maximum range of the light vehicle according to the ECE-15 driving cycle in the city cycle of the NEDC with full charge and a consumption of 6.3 kWh / 100 km is just under 100 kilometers. Usually a range of 70 to 80 km (in winter from 50 to 60 km) is achieved.
All Renault ZE offers have in common that the vehicles are only sold if a rental agreement for the drive battery is concluded with Renault Leasing at the same time . The drive battery thus remains the property of Renault Bank and generates ongoing monthly costs. The limit value for the performance of the drive battery is defined as 75% of the capacity at the beginning. After that, the battery is considered worn out and will be replaced even though it is still functional (with reduced range).
Prices
Vehicle prices
The Renault Twizy is built with two performance versions, one with a top speed of 45 km / h and the more powerful version up to 80 km / h. The prices for the more powerful models are higher (prices in general: February 2013; for Germany: March 2017). In Germany and Austria, only the less powerful model was offered in February 2013, and the more powerful model in April 2013:

Battery rental
Depending on the mileage and duration of the rental agreement, staggered from (as of July 23, 2018):
- 50 € per month with 7,500 km mileage per year with a 36-month term (= 8.00 cents / km)
to:
- € 62 per month with 15,000 km mileage per year with a 36 month term (= 4.96 cents / km)
If the rental period is shortened to 12 or 24 months, the monthly rent increases by € 5.
With regard to the operating costs, it should be noted that the battery rental corresponds to a fuel consumption of up to 6.15 liters per 100 km (assuming a fuel price of 1.30 €, 36 months rental period, 7,500 km per year with full use of the contractual mileage, does not include the cost of electricity to charge the battery).
Since mid-2018 it has been possible to request an offer from Renault Bank to release the battery from an ongoing rental agreement.
After a technical inspection by a ZE dealer and approval, the battery is then sold to the end customer with a warranty by the dealer.
No government funding
The state purchase premium granted by the German federal government for electric cars since 2016 only applies to regular passenger cars. However, the Twizy is classified as a light vehicle or quad. No state funding is granted.
Sales figures and delivery bottlenecks
In the first year of delivery (nine months after March 2012) around 1,800 vehicles were sold and registered in Germany. The annual production worldwide was about 9000 units. This changed drastically in the second year. Sales fell to 3,300 vehicles. In Germany the number was around 800 vehicles. Probably in response to these sales figures, annual production was reduced to 2500 units in the following years.
In the course of a temporary purchase price reduction of 2000 euros ("electric bonus") by Renault between January 1 and April 30, 2016, this led to a bottleneck in Germany with delivery times of up to six months. Due to a subsequent European homologation to EU regulation 168/2013, the Twizy could not be officially ordered since mid-June 2016; Vehicles that were being delivered or stored at dealerships had to be registered by December 31, 2016, as otherwise they would fall under the same registration stop as new vehicles. According to Renault Germany, this situation should possibly last until May 2017.
Orders were accepted again from March 2017. But just a few weeks later, another order stop was announced, because due to the many applications submitted to dealers, the production capacities were exhausted by the end of the year (300 Twizys per month).
The first Twizy according to EU regulation 168/2013 were delivered from June 2017. These differ from the previous models in that they have an orange charging cable (blue charging cable).
Since then, the sales figures have fluctuated greatly. Worldwide, only 853 vehicles were sold in 2017, from 2018 to September only 1145 vehicles.
In total, around 4800 Twizys were approved in Germany between 2012 and 2018.
A new order from Renault dealers is not possible in the summer of 2019, as there has been a long-term production stop due to the relocation of the production facility from Spain to South Korea. Since the beginning of February 2020, Renault has been accepting orders for Korean production again with delivery times of around 4 to 5 months.
Manufacturing and marketing
The vehicle was manufactured from 2011 to mid-2019 in the Spanish plant of Factoría Carrocería Montaje Valladolid Renault España SA in Valladolid . Renault has been producing the vehicle at the Renault-Samsung plant in Busan, South Korea, since 2019 , from where it is exported to Europe.
The model is sold under the name of the Renault project. ZE Renault markets the Twizy through the French DJ David Guetta as a brand ambassador. In three music videos for his songs ( Where Them Girls At , The Alphabeat and Rest of My Life ), Twizys are integrated into the plot.
