The Mégane I represents the first generation of Renault's Mégane compact class car , which was manufactured from autumn 1995 to summer 2003.

Model history

After production began in October 1995, the Renault Mégane came onto the market on January 19, 1996 as a five-door hatchback and two-door coupé. The notchback variant ( Classic ) followed in September 1996, the Van Scénic in November 1996 and the Cabriolet in April 1997.

From 1997 the anti-lock braking system was standard for the Mégane in Germany.

Facelift

In March 1999, the series was revised , with a redesigned front and rear lights as well as changed interior. At the same time, the last body variant, the Grand Tour station wagon, was added. The Mégane Scénic received a facelift in September 1999. Since then it has only been sold as a Scénic and classified as a separate model series.

From October 2000, new equipment lines, a new common rail diesel and smaller visual embellishments such as a chrome trim around the radiator grille or painted door handles (depending on the equipment variant) were added. According to the Euro-NCAP website, a Mégane (1999) achieved a rating of four stars in the European standard crash test.

The hatchback sedan was replaced in November 2002, the Classic (notchback), Grandtour (station wagon) and convertible variants were gradually replaced in the following year. In Venezuela, the first generation Mégane is still produced and marketed in the Mégane Classic version.

Equipment variants

The individual versions of the Mégane initially offered three (later: four) basic variants. "RXE" (later: "Privilège") was the best equipped variant. The equipment options were:

1995 to 2000
  • Eco (most economical engine)
  • RN
  • RT
  • RXE
2000 to 2003
  • Authentique
  • Expression (outside of Germany)
  • Dynamique
  • Privilège (includes all option packages)

In addition, it was possible to choose between four option packages, after which the equipment and materials were further improved. "Luxe" corresponds to the highest quality equipment. The following packages were available:

  • Fairway
  • Confort
  • Dynamique Luxe
  • Luxe

Mégane Coach / Coupé

The Mégane Coach is the two-door version of the first Mégane and at the same time a smaller sports coupé . It shares a common basis with the Meganè Cabriolet.

With the revision in March 1999, the vehicle was then called the Megane Coupé . The name Coach was only used in some countries like Germany or Italy, while in France and England it was called Coupé from the beginning.

In contrast to the hatchback version, there were sometimes different, more powerful engines and special models. Three equipment variants were possible for the Coach:

  • Fashion Coach (with air conditioning and electric windows as standard)
  • Coach Rallye Monte Carlo (with partial leather interior and white speedometer dials)
  • Trim Line (full leather interior, heated windscreen, CD changer, heated seats)

Until September 2000, the coupé was only available in the equipment variants “Coupé” and “Coupé Sport”. The equipment included sports seats, electric windows (rear electric opening windows), ABS, on-board computer, immobilizer, leather steering wheel, fog lights and, in the case of "Sport", also a rear spoiler, aluminum wheels, air conditioning and a CD radio.

From October 2000 four models were available:

  • Expression (only 1.4 16V)
  • Dynamique
  • Evidence
  • Privilege

In August 2002, production of the Mégane Coupé ran out.
