Fauna & Flora International ( FFI ), formerly also the Fauna and Flora Preservation Society , is an international nature conservation association and non-governmental organization .

History

FFI was originally founded in 1903 as the Society for the Preservation of the Wild Fauna of the Empire by a group of British nature activists and American statesmen in Africa . It later became the Fauna Preservation Society before being renamed the Fauna and Flora Preservation Society in 1981 .

The society's goal was to secure the future of large mammal populations that were rapidly declining due to excessive hunting and land appropriation. Together with landowners, the government and sport hunters, the organization helped pass a law to control hunting in large areas of East Africa and South Africa . This finally opened the way for national parks to be developed , including Kruger National Park and Serengeti National Park .

FFI has been described by many historians as the world's first environmental protection organization. The organization's initial work in Africa led to a trend in ecotourism . The organization also played a key role in establishing the world's species conservation infrastructure. These include the World Conservation Union (IUCN), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Washington Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES).

activities

The association's scientific journal, Oryx: The International Journal of Conservation , is published on behalf of Cambridge University Press.

FFI follows a seven-part approach to conserving biodiversity:

  1. Create regional space for environmental protection
  2. Combine biodiversity with human needs
  3. Direct protection of species and their habitats
  4. Secure land for the purpose of species conservation
  5. Contingency plan for environmental protection purposes
  6. Influence conservation policy and implementation
  7. Bridging the gap between business and biodiversity

In addition to the seven-part approach to environmental protection, Fauna & Flora recently endorsed the Forests Now Declaration , which calls for new market-based mechanisms to protect tropical forests.

construction

The association is governed by English law as a limited company and is a registered charity with its registered office in Cambridge. FFI has sister organizations in the United States, Australia and a subsidiary in Singapore .

The association's logo is an Arabian oryx , based on Operation Oryx , a breeding program carried out by the organization.

Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands is the president of the organization, Elizabeth II is a sponsor. FFI also has a number of senior vice presidents including Sir David Attenborough , David Bellamy , Stephen Fry , Charlotte Uhlenbroek , Rove McManus and Baron Browne von Madingley . FFI has members in over 80 countries.

Milestones

The first publication of the journal, the predecessor of Oryx - The International Journal of Conservation, took place in 1903. In 1962, Operation Oryx helps to save the Arabian oryx from extinction through a breeding program with successful reintegrations into the wild in Jordan , Oman and Saudi Arabia. Arabia . This was one of the world's first and successful breeding and reintegration efforts for an endangered species. In 1966, Peter Markham Scott , Chairman of the IUCN Species Survival Commission , became Chairman of the FFI and designed the Red Data Books , a systematic study of all endangered species.

In 1971, 100% Funds (now known as the Flagship Species Fund ) is founded to support small projects that urgently need environmental protection measures, which in turn serve to protect endangered species around the world. A year later, on the initiative of Gerald Durrell, the World Conference on Breeding Endangered Species in Captivity as an Aid to their Survival was opened in Jersey . This enabled the first exchange of ideas among scientists regarding ideas of breeding.

In 2000, Alexander Peal , president of the Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia , whose work has been supported by FFI since 1996, received the Goldman Environmental Prize , one of the greatest honors for a conservationist.
