David Bellamy (1981)

David James Bellamy OBE (born January 18, 1933 in London - † December 11, 2019 ) was a British botanist and author who was active in environmental protection .

Bellamy studied botany at Chelsea College of Science and Technology, did his doctorate in botany and taught from 1960 as a lecturer at Durham University (later until 1982 senior lecturer and then with an honorary professorship in adult education). Beginning with a 1967 Nature article on the effects of oil pollution from the wrecked tanker Torrey Canyon , he has advocated environmental protection and nature conservation in numerous publications, books and television broadcasts among the British public. He also moderated television series on botany (Bellamys Pflanzen-Report), which also ran on German television. He was the author of over 45 books, some of which he illustrated himself with watercolors.

His career with the BBC ended when he publicly voiced criticism of anthropogenic global warming (in a letter to the New Scientist in 2005, but has since admitted mistakes and withdrew from the debate).

He was the founder of the Conservation Foundation .

Bellamy was OBE . He was a Baptist and married Rosemary Bellamy from 1952. The couple had five children, four of whom were adopted.
