Petra Laurentien Brinkhorst , Princess of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau , wife of Amsberg (born May 25, 1966 in Leiden , Netherlands ) is an anti- illiterate activist and former communications consultant. Since her marriage to Prince Constantijn of Orange-Nassau, she has been addressed with Royal Highness .

Life

Youth and education

Petra Laurentien Brinkhorst is the only daughter of Laurens Jan Brinkhorst , a former Minister for Economic Affairs of the Netherlands, and Jantien Heringa. Laurentien Brinkhorst spent some of her school days in The Hague and later in Tokyo (where her father worked for the European Economic Community). After finishing school, she studied history at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen . She then studied political science at Queen Mary University in London and journalism at the University of California at Berkeley .

Professional activities

Laurentien Brinkhorst began her professional career in 1991 at CNN in Atlanta. In May 1992 she moved to the Belmont European Policy Center in Brussels and later worked for the tobacco company Philip Morris . In 1997 she became deputy director of a PR company and in 2000 she became a member of the board of the Brussels consulting firm van Adamson BSMG Worldwide . From July 2001 to May 2003 she worked for the company's London office. Since May 2003 she worked for an independent communications consultant in Brussels. She is currently active for the European Climate Foundation.

On December 16, 2000, the engagement to Prince Constantijn was announced. On May 17, 2001, the civil ceremony of the Mayor of The Hague, Wim Deetman , took place in the Old Council Chamber in Javastraat . Two days later Carel ter Linden performed the church wedding in the St. Jacobskerk in The Hague. Princess Laurentien was not raised to the nobility through the marriage, but she carries the title of her husband.

The couple has three children:

  • Eloise Sophie Beatrix Laurence Gravin van Oranje-Nassau, Jonkvrouw van Amsberg (born June 8, 2002 in The Hague)
  • Claus-Casimir Bernhard Marius Max Graaf van Oranje-Nassau, Jonkheer van Amsberg (born March 21, 2004 in The Hague)
  • Leonore Marie Irene Enrica Gravin van Oranje-Nassau, Jonkvrouw van Amsberg (born June 3, 2006 in The Hague)

Public performances

As a member of the Dutch royal family, Princess Laurentien performs representative tasks. This is especially the case on King's Day and Prince's Day .

social commitment

The princess has been campaigning against illiteracy since 2001 (she had already given voluntary lessons for illiterate people in Brussels). In doing so, she concentrates on projects that are devoted to combating illiteracy among adults. It also supports initiatives that encourage reading by children and young people. On May 27, 2004, the Stichting Lezen & Schrijven (Foundation for Reading and Writing) was founded on her initiative . She has been a volunteer UNESCO ambassador for literacy since 2009 . On February 1, 2011, the Princess was appointed Chair of the High Level Group of Experts on Literacy of the European Commission , which presented its final report in 2012. In November 2017, Princess Laurentien resigned from her position as Honorary President of the Lezen & Schrijven Foundation.

In the field of sustainability and nature conservation, Princess Laurentien is active, among other things, within the framework of the Missing Chapter Foundation . This foundation, which she founded in 2009, encourages decision-makers to take the perspective of children and young people into account when making decisions.

Under her pseudonym "Laurentien van Oranje" she wrote three children's books:

Laurentien Brinkhorst also wrote together with children's book author Paul van Loon De Sprookjessprokkelaar (2014) - the second volume in the series was published in 2019 - and together with Jeroen Smit Nog Lang en Gelukkig (2016).
