The Royal Dutch Standard

Membership in the Dutch royal house (the House of Orange-Nassau ) is regulated in the law on membership of the royal house ( Wet lidmaatschap koninklijk huis ), amended in 2002 . According to Article 1, the royal house includes the ruling king as head, those who are entitled to heir to the throne according to the constitution of the Netherlands , unless they are blood relatives as “in the second degree” (within the meaning of the law), the possible heir to the throne and the resigned king. According to Article 2, spouses of members of the royal family also count towards the royal family.

For persons who were members of the royal family before the amendment, the old regulation will continue to apply in accordance with Article 3, which provided for membership even in the case of consanguinity of the third degree.

Membership in the royal house is lost if someone loses the right to succeed to the throne.

In contrast to membership in the royal family, according to Article 25 of the Constitution of the Netherlands, third-degree blood relatives are also entitled to the throne.

There is also the concept of the royal family, which also includes other relatives of the king.

acceptance

According to a poll from October 2009, 70 percent of respondents wanted the Netherlands to remain a kingdom. Only 13 percent were in favor of a republic. However, large majorities are in favor of saving on salaries and air travel, and members of the royal family should also pay taxes. 47 percent wanted to retain the political influence of the queen at the time (not insignificant in constitutional crises), 48 percent wanted no more influence from the then queen and four percent wanted more influence.

The former queen and today's princess Beatrix was rated by a majority as likeable, distant and conservative as queen. More than three-quarters of the supporters from VVD, CDA, ChristenUnie (highest value, 86 percent) PvdA and GroenLinks answered “sympathetically”, but only 59 percent of SP supporters and 25 percent of PVV supporters.

The former Crown Prince and today's King Willem-Alexander was found to be just as likeable as Crown Prince as being closer to the people, but also by a narrow majority as boring. Just under forty percent each found it conservative or progressive. 65 percent said he was a suitable head of state.

Ninety percent found today's Queen Máxima sympathetic during her time as a princess, even the PVV supporters with 65 percent. It also received high scores when asked whether it was interesting, close to the people or progressive.

The Dutch royal family is now considered the richest in Europe and is one of the billionaires . King Wilhelm III. had a 25% share in the founding of the NV Koninklijke Maatschappij Tot Exploatie van Petroleumbronnen in Neederland-Indie in 1890 and therefore allowed this corporation to be renamed Royal . In 1907 it merged with Shell Transport and Trading Company plc in London and since 2005 has formed Royal Dutch Shell plc. The participation of the royal family in the overall group held by various family foundations is estimated today at around 3.5%.
