On June 30, 2003, Mabel Wisse Smit's engagement to the second eldest son of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands , Prince Johan Friso, was announced. The couple met through Johan Friso's brother Constantijn and his wife Laurentien . The wedding plans were overshadowed by a media scandal ("Mabelgate") triggered by an article in the Dutch daily de Volkskrant . There was quoted in an article from October 11, 2003 from a letter from the Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende to the Dutch parliament, according to which Wisse Smit and Johan Friso made incomplete and incorrect information about Wisse Smit's relationship with the Amsterdam drug lord Klaas Bruinsma (1953-1991) had. The news that a close relationship between Wisse Smit and the Bosnian-US lawyer and former Bosnian Foreign Minister Muhamed Sacirbey , who was charged with fraud in 2003 , caused a further stir . The Dutch government then refused to consent to the wedding.

This led to Mabel's husband Prince Johan Friso (1968-2013) losing his membership of the Dutch royal family and the title of "Prince of the Netherlands" when they got married. The wedding took place on April 24, 2004 in Delft . Mabel Wisse Smit did not become a member of the royal family. However, she may be addressed by her husband's title.

The couple has two children:

  • Emma "Luana" Ninette Sophie Gravin van Oranje-Nassau and Jonkvrouw van Amsberg (born March 26, 2005 in London )
  • Joanna "Zaria" Nicoline Milou Gravin van Oranje-Nassau and Jonkvrouw van Amsberg (born June 18, 2006 in London)
