Carlos Hugo of Bourbon-Parma (1968)

Carlos Hugo von Bourbon-Parma (born April 8, 1930 in Paris ; † August 18, 2010 in Barcelona ), Duke of Parma , inherited the claims of the Carlist counter-kings of the Spanish Bourbons, but renounced the de facto re-establishment of the Spanish monarchy in favor of Juan Carlos I , under whom the monarchy was re-established in Spain in 1975. Since 1977 his younger brother Don Sixto Enrique von Bourbon-Parma (* 1940) has been claiming the title of Carlist pretender to the throne because Carlos Hugo has lost his rights through his left-wing politics; their mother supported him until their death in 1984.

Origin and title

Carlos Hugo was the eldest son of Duke Franz Xaver of Bourbon-Parma (1889–1977) and his wife Madeleine nee. Princess of Bourbon-Busset (1898–1984), daughter of Georges de Bourbon-Busset, Count of Lignières. He was baptized in the name of Hugues Xavier Marie Sixte Robert Louis Jean Georges Benoît Michel . In 1963 he was given the name Charles Hugues (Spanish Carlos Hugo , Dutch Karel Hugo or Carel Hugo ). María Teresa de Borbón-Parma was one of his five siblings.

Carlos Hugo was the bearer of the following titles: Duke of Parma and Piacenza , from 1957 Prince of Asturias , 1961 to 1963 Duke of San Jaime, from 1964 Duke of Madrid, bearer of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Carlos Hugo I as the Carlist anti-king from 1975 .

Through his father, Carlos Hugo was a first cousin of both Otto von Habsburg (1912–2011) and the former Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg (1921–2019).
