His paternal grandparents were Carlos María Isidro de Borbón and Doña Maria Francesca de Bragança , Infanta of Portugal.
On April 26, 1871, Don Alfonso Carlos married his cousin (second degree) Maria de las Neves de Bragança, Infanta of Portugal (1852-1941), daughter of the Portuguese King Miguel I and his wife Princess Adelheid von Löwenstein-Wertheim- Rosenberg . A son emerged from the harmonious marriage, but he died shortly after birth.
The Duke of San Jaime died in Vienna in 1936 and was buried in Puchheim Castle . From 1936 to 1952 there was no official pretender of the Carlist movement.

Alfonso Carlos, the last pretender of the Carlist branch of the Bourbons, had appointed Prince Javier (I.) de Borbón-Parma y Braganza (1889–1977) as regent shortly before his death , since he was the closest related Bourbon upheld the Carlist ideals.
