Maria Beatrix of Austria-Este
Maria Beatrix Anna Franziska of Austria-Este (born February 13, 1824 in Modena , † March 18, 1906 in Graz ) was an Archduchess of Austria-Este and Princess of Modena and, by marriage, Infanta of Spain and Countess of Montizón.
Life
Maria Beatrix was the youngest daughter of Duke Francis IV of Modena (1779–1846) from his marriage to Maria Beatrix (1792–1840), daughter of King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia .
On February 6, 1847 in Modena, she married the Infante Juan Carlos de Borbón (1822-1887) who belonged to the Carlist line of the Spanish royal family and who appeared as Count of Montizón since 1860 as the Spanish pretender to the throne. The couple lived in Modena, but fled to England in 1848 before the revolution.
Maria Beatrix, who was brought up very religiously, was considered extremely conservative and pious and soon came into contradictions with her liberal husband, who rejected the influence of the clergy and great moral austerity. The couple separated in 1850. Maria Beatrix returned to Modena and lived there with her children. She could not prevent her sons from intervening in the political turmoil in Spain. After her husband became mentally ill and her sons grew up, Maria Beatrix entered the Carmelite convent in Graz in 1872 under the name Sister Maria Ignatia of the Sacred Heart of Jesus , where she also died and was buried. During her time in the monastery, she had written religious works.
Maria Beatrix was the bearer of the Star Cross .
