Brigitte Hamann , née Deitert (born July 26, 1940 in Essen , † October 4, 2016 in Vienna ), was a German-Austrian historian and author .

Life

Brigitte Deitert studied German and history at the Universities of Münster and Vienna . In 1963 she passed the secondary school teacher exam in Münster, completed an internship at the German Press Agency in Essen and in 1964 became editor of the Neue Ruhr Zeitung . In 1965 she married the Viennese historian and university professor Günther Hamann (1924–1994), in addition to her German citizenship, from 1966 she also had Austrian citizenship and worked as an assistant for her husband. In 1978 she received her doctorate from Adam Wandruszka with a dissertation on the Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf . In the same year she published his biography under the title Rudolf. Crown Prince and Rebel . The book was a great success. Brigitte Hamann then worked as a freelance historian.

On November 22nd, 2012 she was awarded the honorary prize of the Austrian book trade for tolerance in thought and action in the Vienna City Hall, the laudation was given by Gerald Stourzh .

Brigitte Hamann was the mother of three children, including the journalist and feminist Sibylle Hamann .

Her final resting place is in the Grinzinger Friedhof (group 36, row 1, number 25) in Vienna.

Hamann preferred to work on works on Austrian history and devoted himself to a biographical approach. Her special focus was on the history of the Habsburgs and the history of National Socialism . About her personal starting point, she said: "I (coming from Germany) had a different view of Austria and began to write with a certain distance."

Their publication Hitler's Vienna (cf. Hitler's Years in Vienna ) convinced by meticulously investigating new sources and vividly depicting the Christian-social and ethnic - anti-Semitic dominated political culture of Vienna in those years.
