Concordia press club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Concordia Press Club is an independent association in Austria , to which Austrian journalists and writers as well as correspondents from foreign media belong.

history

It was founded on August 23, 1859 with the original purpose of supporting members in need, making it the oldest press club in the world.

In 1872 a pension fund was set up.

In 1880 the Concordiaplatz in Vienna's Inner City (1st district) was named after the club.

Between 1938 and 1945, the club was dissolved during the Nazi era and its assets were confiscated.

It was re-established in 1946 and merged with the Austrian Press Club in 1958 to form the name Presseclub Concordia , which is still valid today . In the same year, the renovation of Bankgasse 8 in Vienna was completed and handed over to the association by the then Federal Chancellor Julius Raab . The building has since been known as the Concordiahaus .

activities

According to its statutes, the association is committed to human rights , democracy and freedom of the press.

The Concordia Prize is awarded annually in the categories of human rights and freedom of the press as well as in an honorary category.

In the course of its existence, the press club has appeared again and again as the organizer of important media events. On May 7, 1984, for example, the press conference of the animals took place in the Concordia press club , at which several prominent personalities disguised as animals campaigned against the construction of a power plant in the Hainburger Au and for the preservation of the river landscape.

The press club is also the organizer of the Concordia Ball , which has been held annually in the Vienna City Hall since 1863, now mostly in June .
