The Concordia Ball is an annual ball that is organized by the Concordia Press Club and takes place in the Vienna City Hall . It is one of the oldest and most sophisticated Viennese dance events.

history

The journalists and writers' association Concordia , founded in 1859, hosted its own ball for the first time on January 19, 1863 in the Sofiensäle . Over time, the ball's reputation grew and was one of the most exclusive balls in the capital and royal seat of Vienna during the monarchy . One of the regular visitors was Crown Prince Rudolf . The ball took place annually until 1914, except in 1889, the year of Crown Prince Rudolf's suicide, and in 1913.

After the First World War and the collapse of the monarchy, the importance of the ball disappeared until it was temporarily discontinued in the 1930s and during the Great Depression, even during the time of the corporate state it was not taken up again. After the " Anschluss of Austria ", the Club Concordia was forcibly dissolved by the Nazis in 1938. The Concordia press club was reactivated in 1946, but it wasn't until 1960 that the Concordia Ball was revived by President Rudolf Kalmar, with the support of Vice Mayor Hans Mandl . Since then, the Concordia Ball has taken place during the Wiener Festwochen in the Vienna City Hall.
