Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna is an award from the City of Vienna .

In its public session chaired by Mayor Theodor Körner on February 18, 1949, the Vienna City Council decided to donate an honorary gift as a sign of recognition of merits, which bears the designation "Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna". It is not intended for public wear and is awarded by the municipal council together with a certificate signed by the mayors. It is intended to serve as an outward sign of recognition and appreciation of the special charitable work in the field of social, economic, scientific and cultural life in the City of Vienna. The aim was to be able to honor achievements from now on and to create a supplement to the already existing honors ( honorary citizenship , civil rights and honorary ring ); the medal of honor is ranked fourth behind the ring of honor.

Since the resolution of the municipal council on February 26, 1960, the award has been made in three stages: in addition to the medal of honor originally made in bronze, also in silver (silver-plated) and gold (gold-plated).

The medal with a diameter of about 80 mm is made according to a design by Oskar Thiede and bears the coat of arms of the city of Vienna on the front, a picture of the town hall as well as the dedication words “For special services to Vienna” in a laurel wreath on the back.

The medal was first awarded on April 12, 1949.

The medal of honor is not to be confused with the decorations for services to the State of Vienna .
