Esther Réthy
Violet Esther Réthy (born October 22, 1912 in Budapest , † January 28, 2004 in Vienna ) was a Hungarian opera singer ( soprano ).
Life
Réthy was trained in Budapest by Magda Rigó and Vienna and made her debut in Budapest in 1934, where she had an engagement from that time. She was subsequently discovered by Bruno Walter and was a member of the Vienna State Opera between 1937 and 1949 . She also appeared between 1937 and 1941 and from 1950 at the Salzburg Festival , an engagement at the New York Met failed in 1940 during World War II. For this reason, she also belonged to the ensemble of the Budapest National Opera between 1941 and 1944 .
Réthy also appeared at the Bregenz Festival and made guest appearances in Brussels, Munich, Switzerland and Turkey. Between 1949 and 1972 she sang at the Volksoper Vienna and appeared in particular in operettas. From 1954 she was a teacher at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna and from 1971 at the Vienna Music Academy .
Réthy's first marriage to the conductor Anton Paulik , and his second marriage to Vinzenz Imre. In their second marriage, their son, the conductor László Imre, was born.
