The Neustift cemetery in Vienna is the cemetery of the Döblinger district Neustift am Walde , which until 1938 belonged to the 18th district, Währing . When the border changes at that time, the cemetery remained in the 18th district.

location

The Neustift cemetery is located in the north of Währing directly on the border with Döbling. Neustift am Walde was originally part of the Währings district, but was attached to Döbling in 1938. Since the Sommerhaidenweg was set as the new border , the Neustift cemetery is still part of Währing today. The cemetery itself lies between the streets of Sommerhaidenweg and Pötzleinsdorfer Höhe and extends from their intersection to the Dorotheer Wald. The official address of the cemetery is Pötzleinsdorfer Höhe 2.

history

Early Neustift cemeteries

A first cemetery of the communities Neustift and Salmannsdorf was in the corridor of sacrificial pistons. The area is located in the area where Agnesgasse branches off from Rathstrasse to Sievering . However, the location of the cemetery on the nearby Krottenbach caused serious problems. Often the coffins floated in the water after they were lowered into the grave. This meant that the coffins could only be buried at a shallow depth. The circumstances meant that the decomposition was slow and a constant threat of epidemics. That is why the community was convinced of the need to build a new cemetery on the Hutweide . The new cemetery was consecrated on November 25, 1823 by Provost Gaudentius Andreas Dunkler from Klosterneuburg Abbey . The first burial took place on December 28th.

The neighboring Salmannsdorf buried its dead at the Neustift cemetery. The dead were only buried at the cholera cemetery in Keylwerthgasse on the saddle on the way to Neuwaldegg during the epidemic . Neustift am Walde also had an epidemic cemetery, which was later combined with the second cemetery. In 1858 this second cemetery was expanded by a few fathoms . On August 7th, the new prelate Adam Schreck inaugurated the expansion of the cemetery. Important people who were buried here were Professor Georg Kurzbauer and the writer Otto Leonhard Friedmann. The cemetery, which was in the triangle of the streets Sommerhaidenweg, Neustift am Walde and Paletzallee, fell into disrepair more and more after the construction of the New Neustift Cemetery. In the 1920s he was close to being abandoned.

The New Neustift Cemetery

The New Neustift Cemetery was built in the immediate vicinity of the old cemetery, southwest of the mountain. The inauguration was carried out on September 1, 1880 by Prelate Fröschl of Klosterneuburg. It is still in operation today.
