Life
Gaudentius Dunkler, originally from Moravia, made his profession in 1768 in the Augustinian monastery of Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria. He was ordained a priest in 1771, and in 1782 became a doctor of theology . In Klosterneuburg he initially assumed the function of the monastery librarian (1795), and finally became provost in 1800. As early as 1795/96, Dunkler was dean of the theological faculty of the University of Vienna before he became its rector in 1802. Dunkler died in 1829 in Klosterneuburger Hof, today Renngasse 10, in Vienna.
meaning
Under the leadership of Gaudentius Dunkler, the Viennese suburb of Neu-Meidling, which was previously part of the Untermeidling community , received permission from Klosterneuburg Abbey as the landlord to constitute itself as an independent community in 1819. As a thank you for this, the place was named after the name of Gaudentius Dunkler Gaudenzdorf . With the approval for self-employment, he made a significant contribution to the ambitious further development of Gaudenzdorf, which was one of the five suburbs of Vienna from which the 12th Viennese district of Meidling was later formed.
In addition to the name of the place Gaudenzdorf, which still exists today as a cadastral community, the former Jakobstrasse in Vienna-Meidling was renamed Dunklergasse in 1894 in honor of the Klosterneuburg provost . The important street of the Gaudenzdorf belt also keeps its name.
