history

Untermeidling around 1830

In 1806 the Viennese suburb of Meidling was divided into Obermeidling and Untermeidling. Corresponding plans had already existed since 1784. The historic center of Meidling - located on Meidlinger Hauptstrasse between Lobkowitzbrücke and Tivoligasse - remained with Untermeidling. Gaudenzdorf was detached from Untermeidling as a separate municipality in 1819. Wilhelmsdorf followed in 1846, but in 1850 it was again attached to Untermeidling due to insufficient financial strength.

Untermeidling developed into a popular summer retreat for the Viennese population, to which the sulfur-containing springs of the reopened Theresienbad and the Pfannsche spa, founded in 1819, contributed. At the same time the population of the municipality increased. Between 1857 and 1875 the area between Meidlinger Hauptstrasse and Aßmayergasse was built. Today's Meidlinger Friedhof , laid out as the common cemetery of the communities Untermeidling, Obermeidling and Gaudenzdorf, has existed since 1862. In 1874 Untermeidling acquired the Meidlinger Hofküche water line , which had previously supplied the Schönbrunn Palace with water. The Meidling slaughterhouse, which existed from 1888 to 1953, was also of economic importance for the community . In 1890/1892 Untermeidling was incorporated into Vienna and since then has belonged to the 12th Viennese district of Meidling.

In the south of the district, Unter-Meidlinger Straße, so named in 1905, is a reminder of the place.
