Pfannsches bath

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pfannsche Bad was a private spa in the 12th Viennese district of Meidling .

history

During excavation work on a well on Josef Pfann's property in today's Niederhofstraße 42, a vein with warm sulphurous water was found by chance in 1819. On February 2, 1820, an official examination of the water was ordered and its medicinal properties confirmed. Thereupon, on July 8th of the same year, the monastery of Klosterneuburg, as landlord, granted permission to build the pool. In June 1821, Josef Michael Freiherr von Ehrenfels, the owner of the nearby Theresienbad, sent Emperor Franz I a request to revoke this permit out of concern about competition, but this was rejected.

Initially, the water from the healing spring was served in a "drinking and spa hall" on the corner of Mandlgasse and Arndtstrasse. As it became known, the facility was significantly enlarged and a swimming pool was also built, which was abandoned around 1896. In addition, a shuttle service was organized using company cars that left the Neuer Markt in the 1st district . In order to make the healing water accessible to people for whom the journey to Meidling was too difficult, it was bottled (“ Halbe-Maß-Bouteille ” or “ Seitel-Bouteille ”) and sold through the pharmacy to the golden crown on the Graben .

In 1868 the Meidlinger workers' education association " Vorwärts " set up the first reading room in Meidling in a rented room.

In 1910, the Pfannsche Bad, which had previously been completely demolished, was rebuilt on behalf of the owner company according to plans by the architect and town builder Franz Quidenus. At that time it had steam baths with hot air and steam chambers, showers, cold and warm water basins, relaxation rooms and 97 baths.

On November 15, 1930, the Pfannsche Bad became the property of the open company " Pfann'sches Mineral- und Schwefelbad Rast, Rittner & Co ".

Natural sulfur baths and physical treatments were carried out here until the bath was closed at the end of August 1976. However, the Pfannsche Bad no longer met modern requirements and so it was bought by the City of Vienna and demolished together with other residential buildings. The Hermann-Leopoldi-Park opposite the Meidlinger Markt was created on the property and opened on April 26, 1984.

Healing effect

A visit to the Pfannschen Bad was recommended for people who suffered from rheumatism , gout , sciatica, joint inflammation or nervous disorders and similar diseases.
