Karl Hilscher (born September 4, 1873 in Vienna ; † May 25, 1936 ibid) was an Austrian local historian, educator and musician. He founded the Meidlinger Heimatmuseum and made a contribution to the historiography of this district.

life and work

Karl Hilscher attended the teacher training institute and then worked at various special schools. Most recently he was a school councilor and director of such a school in Währing . He wrote some works on the history of special schools and was one of the employees of the social democratic school reformer Otto Glöckel .

Hilscher came to local history through his educational work. His main merit lies in this area. After Hilscher had already written numerous works on the history of the 12th Viennese district Meidling , the Meidlinger Heimatmuseum was founded in 1923 , the first such museum in Vienna. Hilscher and some like-minded people (including Otto Glöckel) founded the Central Committee for Local Research, which had set itself the task of collecting and researching objects relating to local history. The first exhibition of the Central Committee took place in 1923 in the school building on Singrienergasse. That was the hour of birth of the Meidlinger Heimatmuseum, which Hilscher also ran until his death. With the support of the then Meidlinger district chairman Alois Zanaschka , the museum found a permanent location in the same year at Bischoffgasse 10, where it remained until 1955.

In 1930 Hilscher published the extensive Meidling manual . The 12th Viennese district in the past and present , which set the trend for the history of the district.

In addition to his historiographical work, Hilscher was also active as a composer, singer and choir director. He learned composition from Rudolf Bibl and Ferdinand Rebay . For many years Hilscher led the Wilhelmsdorfer male choir Flora and at the same time the Meidlinger Liedertafel , from 1905 to 1913 he chaired the Hetzendorfer Sangesfreunde . Most of his songs and choral compositions were sung: I know a little flower, lovely and light , evening song , Ach Scheiden , Die Lore am Tore , An dem Brünnele , Zum Rhein , Die Hochzeit , Mein Mädel and German Danube Song .

After his death he was buried in the Meidlinger Friedhof . In 1949 Hilschergasse in Vienna-Meidling was named after the local researcher. A memorial plaque was attached to the house where he died at 5 Zenogasse.
