The New Market (also: Mehlmarkt ) is one of the oldest squares in Vienna . It is located west of Kärntner Straße in the middle of the old town of Vienna's 1st district, Inner City, and has an elongated, almost rectangular shape. In the middle of the square is the thunder fountain . The buildings have the character of representative town houses.

history

When in the Middle Ages the Hohe Markt was no longer sufficient to supply the Viennese population, the Neuer Markt was created, which was first mentioned as nuiwe market or novum forum in 1234. Since flour and grain were traded here until the 19th century, the square was given the unofficial name Mehlmarkt , which lasted into the 20th century. During the Second World War , the square was badly damaged, many buildings disappeared and were replaced by modern buildings.

In the first half of the 20th century there was a tram terminus on the Neuer Markt . In 1942 the terminus of line 58 was relocated to Ringstrasse , and in 1948 the section leading to the Neuer Markt was closed.

On January 7, 2019, large-scale construction work began on an underground car park on Neuer Markt, which led to the square being completely cordoned off. Several graves from Roman times were discovered.

Buildings

The Donnerbrunnen in the middle of the square was created in 1739 by Georg Raphael Donner . Its actual name is Providentiabrunnen , it is also known as Mehlmarktbrunnen . The bronze sculptures are copies, the originals are in the Austrian Gallery Belvedere . The short Donnergasse , which connects the Neuer Markt with the Kärntner Straße, was named after the sculptor .

The most famous building on Neuer Markt is the Capuchin Church, completed in 1632 . Below it is the resting place of the Habsburgs, the Capuchin Crypt .

At the address Neuer Markt 2 stood the legendary Hotel Meissl & Schadn , built in 1897 , in which Friedrich Adler shot the Prime Minister Karl Stürgkh in 1916 . The building was badly damaged in World War II, demolished and replaced by a new building. Above the restaurant is a sgraffito with rural activities, which was applied in 1957 by Prof. Heinrich Ebner.

The Hotel Ambassador at Neuer Markt 5 was built in 1897 based on designs by the architects Kupka and Orglmeister. In the Middle Ages, the town's flour depot, the so-called flour pit, was located here .

At the southern end of the Neuer Markt, the early 18th century was based on plans by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach built Palais Schwarzenberg . In 1894 the palace was torn down and replaced by profitable apartment buildings.

The house built in 1897 for the Wild Brothers, a former traditional delicatessen store, is located at Neuer Markt 10–11 . The architect was Arnold Heymann , who built the building in the style of the German Renaissance with a facade from the “ Old German Period ”. It counts as his most famous work from this of his creative period. In the meantime, instead of the delicatessen, there has been a restaurant in the house with changing owners for several years.

The so-called Mayseder House at Neuer Markt 15 is one of the oldest houses on the square, built in 1548. The business premises of the traditional jeweler AE Köchert is located here .

The Herrnhuterhaus, with its baroque instrumentation and inspiration from the Vienna Secession , was built in 1900/01 by Karl and Julius Mayreder . It got its name from the canvas shop "zum Herrnhüter", which had been located here since 1797. A statue of a man with a hat and shield attests to the name. The Fürnkranz clothing company was in the house until 2009. The interior was renovated; Since 2010 there has been a flagship store of the Billa grocery chain called Billa Corso on the lower floors .

The Marco d'Aviano monument, the Donnerbrunnen, houses 10–11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, as well as the residential and commercial building complex consisting of four houses with the house number 8 are listed as historical monuments.
