The Hotel Meissl & Schadn (also spelled Meißl & Schadn ) was a very well-known hotel on Neuer Markt  2 (the back at Kärntner Strasse  16) in Vienna's 1st  district, Inner City . According to a contemporary, it was a place of “ noble bourgeoisie, which neither wants to see nor be seen. "

history

The origins of the company go back to the middle of the 17th century. At that time it had the name “Zum Blaue Hirsch”. In 1852 it was acquired by the Viennese innkeepers' cooperative ("by means of the bourgeois wine and innkeepers of Vienna"), which was based there until 1892.

The Hotel Meissl & Schadn was rebuilt in 1894–96 by Karl Hofmeier (1858–1934) in the neo-Gothic- Germanic style and replaced the old building. The facade facing Kärntner Strasse was decorated with mosaics by Eduard Veith , they represented the five parts of the world.

Contemporaries called the adjoining hotel restaurant the "Mecca of beef eaters", and the fiakers from the stand on the Hoher Markt met in the Schwemme. On the occasion of the murder of Count Stürgkh, Maximilian Harden, mocked by Karl Kraus for his flowery language, also noted : (...) To Meißl & Schadn, where dignified aging waiters served the juiciest beef leg meat (boiled in beef broth) and delicious pastries before the war , (...) .

A well-known guest in the hotel was the composer Edvard Grieg , who probably stayed here in 1865, 1869 and 1896.

On October 21, 1916, the socialist Friedrich Adler shot and killed the Imperial and Royal Prime Minister Karl Graf Stürgkh on the first floor of the hotel in the large dining room opening onto Kärntner Strasse .

On May 28, 1932, in the presence of Defense Minister Carl Vaugoin , a memorial plaque donated by the Wiener Schubertbund was unveiled on the now defunct building , dedicated to Joseph Haydn . He is said to have composed the Kaiserlied in the house that stood here in 1794 , which later also became the national anthem of the First Republic .

The building burned down in 1945 during World War II. The side facing Kärntner Strasse with the mosaic that still exists today was more severely damaged than the side facing Neuer Markt, but not demolished, but modernized. The side facing the Neuer Markt was replaced by the new Hotel Europa .

Since September 27, 2017 there is again a restaurant with the same name, which opened at Schubertring 12.

Remarks

  1. Compared to the plan from 1896 (see: pictures ), the new height of the building on the right in the photo, later taken over and converted by Meissl & Schadn, is striking.
