The Wiener Schubertbund is an Austrian male choir .

Foundation and development

The choir was founded by the former choirmaster of the Viennese male choir association Franz Mair in November 1863 in the inn “Zur neue Welt”, in Vienna, Kärntnerring 86, with the name “Lehrersängerchor Schubertbund”. In 1870 the name was changed to "Schubertbund" and in 1922 to "Wiener Schubertbund". The Vienna Konzerthaus has been the seat of the choir since 1918 .

The repertoire focuses on the songs of Franz Schubert, but works by Mozart, Bach, Lehár, Richard Strauss and others are also performed. Recently, modern pieces from the fields of musical, rock and pop have also been arranged.

The first trip abroad took place in 1884 to southern Germany, the last one took the association to the following countries: USA (1999), China (2001), Syria (2002) and Brazil (2006). On October 24, 2004 the choir gave a concert in Geneva in the Palais des Nations on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of CERN .

On January 6, 2009 the choir performed the oratorio “ The Messiah ” by Handel in the original English version in the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein together with the Japanese Festival Chorus . The conductor was Hiroshi Koizumi.

Fritz Brucker has been the musical director since 2001.
