Adolf Kirchl

Adolf Kirchl (born June 16, 1858 in Vienna ; † October 21, 1936 there ) was an Austrian choir director and composer .

Adolf Kirchl was a primary school teacher by profession and worked as such from 1877 to 1904. He also studied music theory and composition theory on the side. From 1891 to 1916 Kirchl was choirmaster of the (Vienna) Schubert League and went on a vocal tour with them in July 1897 in Switzerland . Kirchl was choirmaster of the Lower Austrian Choir from 1893 to 1919 and conductor of the Wiener Konzertverein from 1901 to 1907. After a stay in Zwettl from 1915 to 1923 he was then choirmaster of the Vienna Singers Association. After his death, Kirchl was given an honorary grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 32C, number 12), which shows a portrait relief by Robert Ullmann . From 1938 to 1947 Adolf-Kirchl-Strasse in Wien- Landstrasse was named after him, where there is also a memorial plaque with a portrait relief at number 1 (today Baumannstrasse). Another memorial plaque was attached to the composer's birthplace at Franzensgasse 12. Instead of Adolf-Kirchl-Strasse , Adolf-Kirchl-Gasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him in 1959 . In Zwettl, too, Adolf-Kirchl-Platz is dedicated to him; Since 1949 there has been a memorial with a portrait relief on the square.

Adolf Kirchl specialized in choral music in his compositions. He created around 200 male and 50 female choirs, as well as numerous works for mixed choir. He also published song books for elementary and secondary schools.
