Robert Ullmann (born July 18, 1903 in Mönchengladbach , † March 19, 1966 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist.

Life

Father Viktor Ullmann, fabric printing engraver by trade, and mother Pauline, née Kühnel, moved to the area around Vienna after the birth of their son Robert von Mönchengladbach. Robert Ullmann had drawn and cut silhouettes since his early childhood; he has been modeling in clay since he was five. At the age of 16 he began his studies at the Wieder Akademie für bildende Künste with the sculptor Josef Müllner and graduated at the age of 24. In 1927 he was awarded the Rome Prize for his work "Mother and Child". In 1930 he was working on a memorial to the fallen in northern France. After the annexation of Austria through the German Reich (Anschluss) he received the order for a memorial in Wöllersdorf / Lower Austria from the Nazi regime.

Since 1931 he had a studio in the Prater in Vienna in the immediate vicinity of his friend and colleague Gustinus Ambrosi . Around 1940 he moved to Berlin, where General Building Inspector Albert Speer provided him with a centrally heated studio building with living rooms and a garden in Berlin-Charlottenburg, Fraunhoferstraße 24. He took over the building as the successor to Arno Breker , who had worked there from 1935 to 1939. There he created for Speer's project to transform Berlin into the world capital Germania a . a. the 4.5 m high sculpture "Die Morgenröte" (exhibited at the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich in 1943). Ullmann and Ambrosi kept abreast of their respective contacts with Speer by letter. Ullmann wrote to Ambrosi on March 25, 1942: "... I and my wife would be very happy if you would visit us on your next stay in Berlin". On April 22, 1943, Ullmann's studio in Berlin was destroyed by bombs. The artist moved to a replacement studio in Breslau, where he worked until he was drafted into the Nazi army in October 1944. After the war, he moved with his family to the Salzkammergut and returned to his state studio in Vienna in 1948.

Ullmann also worked for the Augarten porcelain factory , where he mainly designed depictions of animals, but also what is now known as the "Ullmann Nude". He was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery.
