history

The Hohe (in the sense of: important ) market lies above the ruins of the so-called tribune houses (staff officer's quarters) of the former Roman legion camp Vindobona , just north of its main street Via principalis . In the Middle Ages , the Hohe Markt was a center of bourgeois Vienna and was surrounded by numerous guild houses. Mainly food and textiles were traded. From 1325 to 1839 the Viennese criminal court was located here, and the magistrate civil court until 1850; Initially at about today's No. 11, then in the northwest corner of the square (today's No. 5) was the Schranne , the courthouse, with the in-house chapel "To the death of Christ". The judgments were read from the terrace of the Schranne; the place of execution was mostly elsewhere, mostly outside the city walls. A pillory was set up in front of the cupboard .

In the middle of the square is the Vermählungsbrunnen (also: Josephsbrunnen ), which is dedicated to the marriage of Joseph and Mary . The original fountain was made of wood by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and rebuilt from marble by his son Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach around 1792 .

At the anchor clock , created by Franz Matsch in Art Nouveau style and spanning the farmers' market at its northeastern junction from Hohen Markt (at no.11 ), a personality from Viennese history moves across the bridge every hour on the hour, while music is played. Another building from the Art Nouveau style was an underground public toilet in the southeastern part of the center of the square (between houses No. 1 and No. 10-11). It was a replica of the public lavatory on the Graben and was closed due to its poor condition and filled in in 2014.

Palais and elegant houses once lined the square, such as the Palais Arnstein of the Salonnière Fanny von Arnstein at No. 1 and the Palais Sina at No. 8. The square was badly destroyed by aerial bombs in the Second World War, and it was rebuilt in the simple architectural 1950s. Years post-war style. In the end, only four buildings remained of the old structure.

As a result of the destruction of the old buildings and in the course of the reconstruction, remains of Roman officers' houses were discovered around 1948, which can be viewed in the Roman Museum , Hoher Markt 3, since 1950 .
