Vienna, Inner City, by Carl Graf Vasquez

Carl Graf Vasquez-Pinas von Löwenthal (born January 12, 1798 in Klattau , † July 25, 1861 in Budapest ) was an Austrian civil servant and cartographer .

Live and act

Vasquez came from the Spanish noble family Vasquez de Pinos . In 1815 he retired from active military service and from 1822 worked in the "House Interest Collection Commission" of the Lower Austrian provincial government. There he met the lithographer Anton Ziegler. After 1830, a series of highly detailed plans of the city of Vienna and the Vienna police districts was created, in which the suburbs of that time were combined. Vasquez had these plans published together with Ziegler at his own expense. Due to the resulting debts, he returned to military service in 1848, and in 1856 was prematurely retired due to improper behavior.

Today Vasquez is best known for his detailed plans. These mainly included:

  • KK Haupt and Residenz Stadt Wien in 1847
  • Situation plan of the imperial capital and residence city of Vienna (with the suburbs and some suburbs outside the line wall ; the south above)
  • Floor plan of the inner capital and residence city of Vienna with city walls and glacis ; the building stock divided by color according to Schottenviertl , Wimmerviertl , Kärnthnerviertl and Stubenviertl (today the core of the 1st district, which was expanded to include the Ringstrasse zone from 1858 ; see Fig.)
  • Detailed plans of the then KK Polizey districts Alservorstadt , Josephstadt , Landstraße , Leopoldstadt , Mariahilf , Rossau , St. Ulrich , Wieden (see illustration under the headings). Each police district comprised several suburbs; all were incorporated in 1850 and formed districts 2–8 until 1860, and since 1861 districts 2–9
  • Situation plan of the princely city of Baaden with the neighboring localities ... (nine localities were listed).

The Prague engravings from around 1840 have also appeared in book form.
