Dieter Messner

Dieter Messner (born October 19, 1942 in Opole ) is an Austrian Romance scholar and linguist.

life and work

Messner studied at the University of Vienna from 1960 and at the Sorbonne from 1966 . He received his doctorate in Vienna in 1967 with the dissertation Pierre Bersuire, translator of Titus Livius. A vocabulary study for the first book of the first decade and was an assistant at the University of Vienna. From 1969 he moved to the University of Salzburg as an assistant . He completed his habilitation in 1974 and was Professor of Romance Studies in Salzburg until his retirement in 2011. In 2002 he received the Augsburg University Prize for Spanish, Portugal and Latin American Studies .

From the beginning, Messner's central research area has been the history of words in French, Spanish and Portuguese on the basis of chronological repertories and dictionaries (in which the words are sorted according to their first lexicographical evidence). His method culminates in the monumental dictionary of Portuguese dictionaries, which has been published since 1994, in which all existing dictionary articles are listed chronologically for each word (so far over 10,000 pages).
