Friedrich Petuely

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Petuely (born June 15, 1922 in Vienna ; † January 8, 1994 ) was an Austrian pediatrician and biochemist. As director of the Austrian Federal Institute for Food Inspection and Research, he was jointly responsible for Austrian food law. He discovered uses of lactulose in medicine and is particularly considered to be the inventor of lactulose preparations as laxatives . The importance of Petuely's discovery for medicine is shown by the fact that lactulose was included in the list of essential medicines of the World Health Organization .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1940, Petuely studied medicine in Vienna and Graz, interrupted by military service and military service due to the war. From 1946 to 1949 he studied chemistry in Graz. During his work at the University of Graz on the nutrition and intestinal flora of infants, he first observed a positive influence of heated lactose and finally of lactulose on the intestinal flora of infants. In a subsequent study of the effect on adults, he discovered the laxative effect. 1960 to 1963 he was director of the Federal Food Research Institute in Graz. In 1964 he became director of the Federal Institute for Food Inspection and Food Research in Vienna. As such, the Austrian food law helped shape; the law was considered relatively strict and Petuely was feared and respected as an influential “food pope”. In 1981 the National Council said about him: "Hofrat Petuely, who controls very strictly in the exercise of his office, many say that he controls, who has reported many, many people because of small things". In 1980 the Ministry of Health initiated disciplinary proceedings against Petuely, also for having arranged for order forms to be backdated; the proceedings were discontinued due to the statute of limitations. On November 9, 1983, Petuely filed a voluntary disclosure; the next day he was reported by the Ministry of Health. He was accused of providing false evidence in court, providing incorrect evidence or misusing official authority. He had manipulated the description of the samples during sample examinations at the Federal Institute in Vienna. In 1988 Petuely was retired with a monthly pension of 55,000 shillings.

Petuely, who claims to have produced more than 70 publications, died on January 8, 1994. He was buried on January 20, 1994 in the Neustift cemetery (group K, row 8, number 5).
