List of Essential Medicines from the World Health Organization

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of essential medicines of the World Health Organization ( WHO Model List of Essential Medicines ) contains active substances and their preparations are classified as essential drugs are classified. According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), these can satisfy the most urgent needs of a population for medical care. The model list is intended as a recommendation for governments of individual states to develop their own supply standards that are adapted to national guidelines and regional circumstances. By the end of 2003, 156 states had developed official lists of essential medicines.

Explanations

  • The selection of the substances is made by the Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines . The list is revised every two years; the current version is 21 June 2019. It was first published in 1977.
  • The active substances contained in the main list ( core list ) are required according to the WHO for the operation of a basic health system. They are designed to be the most efficient, safest, and most cost-effective remedies for major diseases.
  • Complementary active substances ( Complementary List ) concern diseases that require special diagnostics and special therapeutic options. Less cost-effective resources are also managed as complementary.
  • The WHO marks active ingredients with a square symbol (□) for which the use of an alternative active ingredient with comparable therapeutic properties and the same level of safety is possible. This should be determined when the list is adopted and adapted to national circumstances based on these considerations and on the basis of the price and availability.
  • A separate list for children ( WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children ) has been published since 2007, in its sixth edition in 2017. In the 16th version of the general list, instructions for use in children have been added.
