Triclabendazole (trade name Fasinex ; manufacturer Novartis ) is a drug from the group of chlorinated thio- benzimidazoles that is used as an anthelmintic . Triclabendazole was added to the World Health Organization's Essential Medicines List in 1977 by the World Health Organization (WHO) .
Pharmacological properties
Triclabendazole is an anthelmintic which is mainly used in veterinary medicine with high activity against immature and adult stages of the large and giant liver fluke . There is no effectiveness against roundworms . It has been approved in Germany since September 1999.
Absorption and distribution in the body (pharmacokinetics)
After enteral absorption, triclabendazole is subject to a strong first-pass metabolism in the liver and 70% is absorbed from the intestine. By oxidation caused Triclabendazolsulfoxid and Triclabendazolsulfon , which can be found as a major metabolite in plasma, wherein Triclabendazolsulfoxid is the active component. Triclabendazole itself is only detectable in plasma for a very short time and in extremely low concentrations.
toxicology
Triclabendazole is well tolerated and is neither teratogenic nor embryotoxic in rats.
Physical Properties
Triclabendazole is lipophilic and has only low water solubility.
