Richard Sulík (born January 12, 1968 in Bratislava ) is a Slovak politician and businessman . Since 2009 he has been chairman of the Sloboda a Solidarita party he founded , for which he has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2014 European elections . From 2010 to 2011 he was President of the Slovak Parliament. Since March 2020 he has been the Slovak Minister of Economy and Deputy Prime Minister in the Matovič government .

Sulík spent a large part of his childhood in Germany and became known to a larger audience in German-speaking countries through his numerous appearances on political talk shows.

Life

Sulík was born on January 12, 1968, one of five children of a dentist and a lawyer. From 1974 to 1980 he attended elementary school in Bratislava, in 1980 at the age of twelve he moved to Germany with the whole family . From 1980 to 1984 he attended secondary school in Munich , Gelsenkirchen and finally Pforzheim . From 1984 to 1987 Sulík attended the Technical High School in Pforzheim. Sulík studied general physics at the Technical University of Munich from 1987 to 1989 and business administration at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich from 1989 to 1992 , but dropped out of his studies in 1992 after completing his intermediate diploma .

After the end of the Cold War , he returned to Czechoslovakia in 1991, founded the FaxCOPY company and was its director for the next ten years. In 1998 he started studying at the University of Economics in Bratislava . He completed his studies there in 2003.

Political career

After graduation, he worked as a consultant for the Slovak Ministry of Finance under the direction of Minister Ivan Mikloš , which introduced the 19 percent flat tax drafted by Sulík in 2004 . From 2004 to 2006 he was chairman of the Bratislava waste management company and from July 2006 to April 2007 he was again a consultant for the Ministry of Finance under the direction of Minister Ján Počiatek .

At the beginning of 2009 he founded the liberal party Sloboda a Solidarita (SaS, freedom and solidarity ) and also became its chairman. In the parliamentary elections on June 12, 2010 , the SaS achieved 12.42% of the vote and, with 22 seats, is the third largest group in the Slovak parliament . From July 2010 to October 2011 he served as its president. On October 11, 2011, Sulík and the members of his party did not vote in favor of increasing the euro “rescue fund” EFSF , which sparked a government crisis.

In the 2014 European elections Sulík was the European Parliament voted.

On October 24, 2015, he took part as a speaker at the 4th Conference for Sovereignty 2015 - Freedom for Germany in Berlin of the Compact magazine in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Democracy and Cooperation . On February 13, 2016 he was announced together with Heinz-Christian Strache from the FPÖ as the star guest of the event European Visions - Visions for Europe of the AfD leadership couple Frauke Petry and Marcus Pretzell , but canceled a few hours in advance.

On March 6, 2016, Sulík represented the "upper limit zero" on the TV show Anne Will with the title Is Europe still to be saved - when asked about Slovakia's reluctance to accept refugees - and on the contrary, complained about New Year's Eve in Cologne a "protection of Europeans". He also spoke out in favor of Greece leaving the EU and the euro zone and the abolition of the structural funds. He specifically referred to the beneficiary Slovakia as the reason for this, because allegedly only corruption had found its way there with the funds from Brussels.
