A retinitis or retinitis is an inflammation of the retina . The course of the disease can develop in different ways and ranges from almost no impairment of the patient to complete blindness due to degeneration of the retina. Retinitis is often accompanied by inflammation of the choroid ( chorioretinitis ).

Cytomegalovirus retinitis

The disease is often triggered by general infections, such as toxoplasmosis or tick-borne borreliosis . Retinal inflammation can also occur in the context of cat scratch disease. Certain viruses can also cause retinitis, for example cytomegaly retinitis, bacterial metastatic inflammation is less common.

AIDS patients often have retinitis, which in these cases often leads to blindness. About 30 to 40% of those infected with HIV develop retinitis. With the help of highly active antiretroviral therapy , the occurrence and deterioration of retinitis can be prevented when the immune system recovers .

In the case of certain hereditary diseases with degenerative retinal disease, this symptom was and is still called retinitis pigmentosa , even if this disease is not a primary inflammation and should be called retinopathia pigmentosa .
