Sulfadiazine is an antiparasitic and bacteriostatic effective drug from the group of the sulfonamides . There it is one of the pyrimidine sulfonamides that were launched on the market from around 1946. It is effective orally, is rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and, with a plasma half-life of 8 to 17 hours, is one of the moderately effective sulfonamides.
Sulfadiazine is indicated for the treatment of toxoplasmosis in humans in combination with pyrimethamine . The effect arises from the structural relationship with p -aminobenzoic acid and the resulting inhibition of the folic acid synthesis of the pathogens. The occurrence of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and agranulocytosis have been observed as very rare, serious side effects .
The water-soluble sulfadiazine sodium is only suitable for parenteral administration. An insoluble form is silver sulfadiazine , which is used in local wound treatment.
