Treponema is a genus of gram-negative bacteria from the phylum (the division) of the spiral spirochetes .
Like all spirochetes, Treponema also has peculiarly constructed, helically twisted mobile cells. The cell wall has a layer of glucosamine-glycan and high levels of cardiolipin .
Representatives that live parasitically or as commensals in warm-blooded animals have a narrow temperature range of 30 ° C to 37 ° C. In addition, they are sensitive to high oxygen concentrations, they are microaerophilic . The optimal pH is between 7.2 and 7.4.
Treponema primitia and related species are important inhabitants of the rectum of wood-eating termites . Here they form acetate through reductive processes and play a key role in the carbon turnover.
The Treponema species are the cause of tropical Treponematoses , for the therapy of which penicillins can be used. The best-known representative of Treponema is Treponema pallidum , the causative agent of syphilis . Pinta is caused by the subspecies Treponema (pallidum) carateum . Treponema pertenue is the name of the causative agent of yaws . Treponema paraluiscuniculi is the causative agent of rabbit syphilis . Treponema denticola and Treponema brennaborense play a decisive role in skin inflammation in cattle . Furthermore, Treponema denticola has great pathogenic potency in the area of the teeth holding apparatus ( periodontium ) of humans.
