Keratolysis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Keratolysis (from the Greek kerato - "horn" and lyein - "loosen") describes the dissolving and detaching of horn cells from the outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum . Keratolysis can be associated with visible flaking and under certain circumstances severe irritation (reddening, “burning” etc.). For the treatment of pathologically disturbed keratinization of the skin ( hyperkeratosis ), keratolysis can be forced with medication (→ keratolytic ).
