Keratolytic
A keratolytic (plural: keratolytic ) is a horn-loosening agent . The term is derived from the skin substance keratin .
Keratolytics are used cosmetically and for the treatment of pathological cornification disorders ( hyperkeratoses ) in order to force keratolysis in this way .
The following keratolytics are known:
- Retinoids : acitretin , adapalen , tretinoin , isotretinoin , motretinid , tazarotene .
- Salicylic acid
- Azelaic acid
- Alpha-hydroxy acids , also called "fruit acids". These include lactic acid , mandelic acid and glycolic acid .
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Urea (urea)
Systemically , only acitretin and isotretinoin are used for the purpose of keratolysis.
